Project Overview
County: Lancaster
Municipality: West Hempfield Township
State Route: Route 4005
Local Name: Prospect Road
Project Type: Bridge Rehabilitation
MPMS Number: 119211
Proposed Construction Start: September 2026
Proposed Construction End: August 2027
Last Updated: May 2026
The project includes the bridge rehabilitation of Route 4005 bridge (Prospect Road) over Route 30 in West Hempfield Township, Lancaster County. The purpose of this project is to provide a continued safe and efficient crossing on Route 4005 over Route 30.
Within the project area, Route 4005 is a three-lane roadway located in a predominately open urban setting on rolling terrain and is classified as a Urban Major Collector. The land use surrounding the roadway is predominantly open field with industrial and commercial properties farther from the bridge. The roadway within project limits has a posted speed limit of 40 miles per hour and an average daily traffic volume of approximately 7,300 vehicles per day.
The existing structure was built in 1970 and rehabilitated in 2008. The bridge is a three-span steel I-Beam beam bridge supported on stub concrete gravity abutments and multi-column pier bents. The structure length is 221 feet and has a curb-to-curb width of 44 feet.
The project involves superstructure rehabilitation including painting of the existing superstructure, strip seal gland replacement and cleaning/flushing the existing deck and drainage system. Substructure rehabilitation includes concrete encasement of the existing pier caps and general concrete patching. The horizontal and vertical geometries will not be changed.
Route 4005 will not be detoured during construction. Construction is anticipated to be accomplished using staged temporary traffic control for Route 4005 and Route 30.
The project is currently in design, and construction is expected to take approximately 4 months at this site. The exact construction timeline is not currently known, but construction is currently anticipated to begin in the Fall of 2026 or Spring of 2027.
The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and solicit public input, questions, or concerns regarding the project.
