PennDOT plans to install Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) devices and associated fiber optic and electrical infrastructure along Route 100 (Pottstown Pike) and Hanover Street. The project will also provide interconnection of existing traffic signals, as well as an existing railroad flashing signal. The project limits are in Chester and Montgomery Counties along PA 100 from Glocker Way to County Line Road and in Berks County from County Line Road to Walmart Shopping Center Driveway (approximately ten miles). Along Hanover Street, the limits are from Cedarville Road in Chester County to Beech Street in Montgomery County.

An overview of the ITS device and signal interconnection locations is provided in the figure below and includes the following: Nineteen (19) Closed-Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV), five (5) Changeable Message Signs (CMS), and five (5) Traffic Signals.

The installation of CCTV will allow PennDOT to monitor traffic flow, congestion, and incidents along the corridor as well as along the emergency detour route during detour operations. This will facilitate improved incident response throughout the corridor, and PennDOT will be able to use the CMS to warn motorists of incidents and closures so they can utilize alternate routes and help keep traffic moving. The interconnection of signals will enable PennDOT to improve traffic flow via signal timing upgrades to any integrated signal in real-time, leading to reduced congestion and improved air quality.

Local residents as well as commuters will benefit from the availability of traveler information and improved incident response times resulting in overall decreased congestion in the region and improved travel time reliability within the project area. This project is also expected to improve on-time reliability of bus routes along the corridor.
