Project Overview
County: Chester
Municipalities: Westtown and Thornbury Townships
State Routes: Route 926, U.S. 202
Local Names: Street Road, Wilmington Pike
Project Type: Intersection Improvements
Last Updated: February 2025
The proposed project consists of the installation of a new southbound right-turn deceleration lane on U.S. 202 (Wilmington Pike) at Route 926 (Street Road) and the installation of an additional eastbound left-turn lane on Route 926, creating a double left-turn configuration along the eastbound approach to the intersection with U.S. 202. Additional work includes the upgrade of the signals, ADA upgrades, utility relocations, and mill and overlay.
The Westtown Inn, which was determined eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in September 2015, is located in the northwest quadrant of the intersection. The Brandywine Battlefield, which was declared a National Historic Landmark (NHL) in January 1961, is located in the southwest quadrant of the intersection. The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and consulting parties had concerns regarding the project’s potential vibrational impacts to the Westtown Inn. As a result, the contractor will be required to prepare a before and after building evaluation, monitor vibration levels during construction, and comply with the construction restrictions as stated in the project special provisions. A Section 4(f) de minimis use form was prepared and approved for each location. The CE Level 2 was approved on 06/07/2021.
