DCNR firefighters work to put out fires in state forests with assistance from local firefighters.

All progress of the fire has been stopped; up-to-date information about the status of the wildfires is available on the Commonwealth’s website.

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) is working closely with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA), local fire companies, and county and other emergency response teams to combat two wildfires in Michaux State Forest in Cumberland County. More than 150 personnel are actively engaged in containing the blaze.

The Thompson Hollow Fire is currently estimated at 2,248 acres and is 33 percent contained. The Hammonds Rocks Fire is approximately 497 acres and is 69 percent contained. Containment means that the firefighters have surrounded the wildfire and stopped it from moving beyond a certain point. The fire is not completely out, but all progress of the fire has been stopped. Up to date information about the status of the wildfires is available on the Commonwealth website.

“We are fully committed to stopping these wildfires and preventing further damage to Michaux State Forest and surrounding areas,” said DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. “The fire is a serious threat, but thanks to our dedicated team of wildland fire fighters, foresters, rangers, local responders, and volunteers, we are making progress in controlling it.”

DCNR has deployed firefighting crews, heavy equipment, and air resources to assist with containment efforts. Additional support has been provided by the Cumberland County Emergency Services, local fire departments, and the Pennsylvania State Police, all of whom are working in unison to protect life and property in the area.

No damage to structures or physical injuries have been reported.

"Our teams have been engaged with DCNR and county emergency management officials since the beginning of these incidents to provide any needed support," said PEMA Director Randy Padfield. "We strongly encourage people in the area to stay alert for changing conditions and follow any safety precautions issued by local authorities.”

PEMA has supported DCNR and county operations since late last week with equipment and personnel. Two command trailers, light towers and a generator, and cellular communications equipment are on-site. In addition, a planner from the All-Hazards Incident Management Team (IMT) is integrated with the DCNR Incident Management Team, and PEMA staff was at the Cumberland County emergency operations center to facilitate coordination efforts.

DCNR is asking the public to respect all closures and safety restrictions in Michaux State Forest and at Kings Gap Environmental Education Center and Pine Grove Furnace State Park.

Fire danger remains high, and DCNR recommends that individuals avoid outdoor burning activities until conditions improve.
