During oil and gas extraction, brines are brought to the surface. These brines are separated from hydrocarbons and reinjected into the same or similar underground formations for disposal. Wastewater from hydraulic fracturing activities can also be injected into these wells. Prior to submission of a disposal well application to DEP, a permit must first be issued by the US Environmental Protection Agency, who reviews and regulates the injection, well integrity, protection of groundwater, and closure requirements. DEP’s permit covers the location and construction of the wellbore, surface issues, the potential for induced seismicity, and an examination of the potential for pollution resulting from underground disposal.
