Overview
Applicants for federal funding provided by the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) for drinking water and wastewater infrastructure are required to satisfy federal environmental review requirements. The PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is responsible for the review of environmental information provided by applicants.
Applicants for some types of projects are able to satisfy the requirement using a process called a categorical exclusion. The process is a streamlined review which recognizes that some categories of projects involve little or no risk of environmental concern due to their inherent nature.
Other projects require an environmental assessment, which is a report that addresses specific environmental topics that are relevant to the project.
Further information can also be obtained at the Planning Consultation Meetings. These meetings are held to help potential recipients of PENNVEST funding understand program requirements.
