Project Overview

County: Philadelphia
State Route: 2007
Local Name: Frankford Avenue
Project Type: Bridge Rehabilitation
Construction Start Date: February 2026
Proposed Construction End Date: August 2028
Last Updated: February 2026

This project will rehabilitate the Frankford Avenue Bridge over Frankford Creek. The existing bridge was constructed in 1903. In addition to the replacement of the bridge superstructure, a protective barrier will be added along the sidewalk on Hunting Park Avenue adjacent to Frankford Creek.

The existing bridge is a single span riveted steel thru-girder bridge with a 40-foot curb-to-curb width, 64-foot out-to-out width, two 12-foot lanes, two 8-foot shoulders and two 9-foot sidewalks. The bridge has a total structure length of 88 feet.

The proposed superstructure will match the existing bridge, shoulder and sidewalk widths.

Temporary construction easements will be required at two quadrants of the bridge to permit access to the site during construction, and a right-of-way acquisition will be required at the southwest corner of the bridge for a minor improvement to the retaining wall.

The project will be built under a localized detour that utilizes Hunting Park Avenue and Torresdale Avenue.  Access to adjacent businesses will be maintained throughout construction.

Construction Update

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction will begin on Monday, March 16, on a $10 million project to rehabilitate the bridge that carries Frankford Avenue over Frankford Creek in Philadelphia.

Drivers are advised of the following travel restriction:

During the closure, southbound drivers will be directed to use Torresdale Avenue/Erie Avenue, Castor Avenue, and Sedgley Avenue. Northbound drivers will be directed to use Pike Street and Kensington Avenue.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time when driving near the work area because backups and delays will occur. The schedule is weather dependent.
