Project Overview

County: Cumberland
State Route: SR 0081
Local Name: Route 81 over Stonehouse Road
Project Type: Bridge Rehabilitation
Proposed Construction Start: Spring 2026
Proposed Construction End: Winter 2026
Last Updated: 11/27/2024

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to an online plans display regarding the Route 0081 bridge rehabilitation. The purpose of this project is to address the poor condition of the bridge and provide continued and efficient crossing of Route 0081 over T-545 (Stonehouse Road) in Dickinson Township, Cumberland County.

The project consists of rehabilitation of two 61-year-old prestressed concrete spread box beam structures. The proposed bridge widths will accommodate two 12-foot lanes with 10-foot outside shoulders and 6-foot inside shoulders. Stonehouse Road will be closed for approximately six (6) months to all traffic during the construction. The proposed detour route will use Route 0011 to T-466 (Mooredale Road). Single lane closures will be required on Route 0081 during the construction.

The project is currently in design and construction work is expected to take place in the 2026 construction season.

Additional Project Information

Environmental

The project is located in a rural area in Dickinson Township with rolling terrain. T-545 (Stonehouse Road) crosses under the bridges. Adjacent land uses include wooded land, grass lawns, and roadside vegetation, including mowed grass and brush. Environmental studies for the project include threatened and endangered species surveys, and determination of impacts to cultural resources and historical properties.

No impacts to threatened and endangered species were identified. No cultural resources or historical property surveys are required. There are no waterways or wetlands within the project area.

Utilities

There are existing aerial and underground utilities located within the project limits. The existing aerial utilities are present along T-545 (Stonehouse Rd) and cross over and underneath the I-81 structures. The existing underground utilities service the existing dynamic message sign (DMS) and traffic cameras within the roadway median, immediately adjacent to the northern abutments. It is anticipated that the existing aerial and underground utilities will be impacted by construction. Coordination with utility owners will continue as the design progresses.

Right-of-Way

No permanent or temporary right-of-way acquisitions are anticipated for this project. All proposed work will be completed within legal right-of-way and a right-of-way plan will not be required.

Maintenance and Protection of Traffic

Single lane closures will be required on Route 0081 during the construction. Stonehouse Road will be closed for approximately six (6) months to all traffic during the construction. The proposed detour route will use Route 0011 to T-466 (Mooredale Road). The approximate travel time for those using the detour is five (5) minutes. Please refer to the project’s Detour Plan graphic.
