PennDOT Announces Public Comment Period for Project to Replace the Route 19 Bridge in Perry Township, Mercer County

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to view the online plans display for a project to replace the bridge that carries Route 19 over Little Shenango River in Perry Township, Mercer County.

The project involves improvements through a 1.1-mile section of Route 19 (Perry Highway) beginning at the intersection with Route 358 to approximately 600 feet north of the intersection with Fredonia Road (Route 1001).

The existing Route 19 Bridge will be removed and replaced with a new concrete structure. Additionally, the hillsides around the bridge will be reinforced to prevent erosion.

The project also includes repairing 1 mile of Route 19. Work will include milling, base repairs, and paving, as well as upgrades to the guide rail.

Work is expected to occur during the 2026 and 2027 construction seasons.

A detour will be required during construction and is expected to be in place for approximately 12 months. The proposed detour for motorized vehicles is 24.5 miles and uses Route 358, Interstate 79, and Route 285.

Route 19 is designated Bike Route A. The proposed detour for bicycles uses Fredonia Road and Route 358.

The existing steel I-beam bridge was built in 1942. It is rated in poor condition. Approximately 2,100 vehicles a day use the bridge, on average.

The website for the Route 19 Bridge (Perry Township) includes a handout, plans, and an online comment form, which will be open until February 10, 2025. It can be accessed by visiting www.penndot.pa.gov/District clicking the Projects Near You and the District 1 link.

Those unable to access the information online may give feedback by contacting PennDOT Project Manager Christine Boyer-Krantz at chboyer@pa.gov or 814-678-7379.

The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and receive public input regarding any questions or concerns with the project. It is also an opportunity for the public to review and comment on the project’s potential effect upon Cultural Resources pursuant to the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation’s 36 CFR Part 800 regulations implementing Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
