Project Overview
County: Wayne County
Municipality: Hawley Borough
State Route: Route 0006
Local Name: Main Avenue
Project Type: Bridge Rehabilitation
Proposed Construction Start: Spring 2027
Proposed Construction End: Summer 2028
Last Updated: April 2025
The purpose of the project is to provide a sustainable crossing over Middle Creek that provides a two-lane bridge, addresses the structural deficiencies, and provides continued access to local residents, businesses, and emergency services. The proposed design concept was developed through various efforts including, but not limited to, line and grade plans, environmental clearances, surveying, geotechnical analyses, traffic planning, utility verification and relocation plans, Right-of-Way (ROW) plans.
The proposed rehabilitation will replace the existing adjacent concrete box beams with pre-stressed spread box beams. Full depth pavement reconstruction will take place in the vicinity of the bridge.
This bridge project aims to improve safety and reliability in the project area by addressing structural deficiencies and features of the bridge. It seeks to mitigate traffic disruptions and enhance the roadway for all users. Additionally, the project exemplifies PennDOT’s goals of providing safe and sustainable transportation infrastructure across the Commonwealth.
Additional Project Information
As part of the environmental restrictions, no in-stream work will be allowed from February 15 to April 1 to accommodate the stocking of trout in the Lackawaxen River, approximately 600 feet downstream.
The existing structure is a single-span, 63-foot-long concrete adjacent box beam bridge carrying two lanes of traffic with a curb-to-curb width of 46.0 feet. The overall width of the bridge is 58.5 feet. There are two sidewalks on the bridge that are approximately 5.0 feet wide. The proposed work on the bridge will be carried out using a half-width construction approach, ensuring that one half of the bridge remains accessible throughout each phase. During the first phase, one-way traffic will be safely directed across the bridge using a temporary traffic signal. In the second phase, the bridge will accommodate two-way traffic on the open half of the structure.
