Project Overview

This is a bridge rehabilitation project of the bridge that carries Route 54 (Montgomery River Bridge) over the West Branch Susquehanna River in Montgomery Borough and Muncy Creek Township, Lycoming County.

In order to maintain and extend the service life of the bridge, repairs are needed to address the deterioration in the existing curbs and concrete deck overlay. Work includes removal of the existing concrete deck overlay and replacement with a new concrete overlay, complete curb repairs, replacement of expansion joint seal materials to protect the ends of the existing steel beams from water and salt, minor bridge approach work, and line painting.

The project, which is currently in the design process, is anticipated to be advertised put out for bidding in late 2025. Construction is anticipated to begin in late summer 2026 and be completed in fall 2026.  Construction is restricted between February 15 through July 31, due to a Falcon that resides near the river bridge.

Traffic will be maintained using a detour while work is being performed on the bridge. The detour will include Route 405 and Interstate 180.

Previous Public Outreach

In June 2024, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) attended the Montgomery Borough meeting to introduce the proposed bridge rehabilitation project to the public. The department requested feedback regarding the project from community stakeholders such as businesses, emergency services, fire service, and the school district via the borough council.

On March 11, 2025, the department held an open house after the Montgomery Borough Council Meeting, where the proposed plans were on display for the public to view and provide comments and feedback. In addition, a press release was sent advising the public that the plans are available for public view and comments between March 14, 2025 and April 11, 2025.
