Dunmore, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will host a public plans display from April 28, 2025 to May 26, 2025, to introduce the Route 2107 (Rockwell Avenue) over Interstate 81 Bridge Removal Project, located in Scranton, Lackawanna County.
The purpose of the project is to remove the existing, abandoned crossing over Interstate 81 to enhance public safety, improve infrastructure, and eliminate potential structural hazards.
The project study area will extend approximately 100 feet north and south along Interstate 81 from the existing bridge and approximately 200 feet along the eastern and western roadway approaches.
The proposed project was developed through various efforts including, but not limited to, wetland and water studies, environmental clearances, surveys, drainage design, and preliminary Right-of-Way (ROW) activities.
This bridge removal project aims to improve safety, reduce maintenance, and enhance the overall functionality of Scranton’s transportation network. By eliminating this potential hazard, the project supports PennDOT’s goals of maintaining secure and efficient infrastructure. Additionally, the project will help strengthen the long-term sustainability of the network by addressing aging structures and reducing future problems.
The virtual plans display will include digital picture boards and an online comment form will be made available to the public from April 28, 2025 to May 26, 2025. The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project, display and describe the proposed design concept, and receive public input regarding questions or concerns with the project. It can be accessed by visiting the PennDOT District 4 website penndot.pa.gov/District4, and by clicking on Projects Near You and then searching for the Route 2107 (Rockwell Avenue) over Interstate 81 Bridge Project.
Comment forms are on the project website for the public to submit feedback and questions. Comments will be accepted from April 28, 2025 to May 26, 2025. You could e-mail the form to cmancebocl@pa.gov or mail to PennDOT Engineering District 4-0, Attn: Carmen Mancebo Clase, PE, 55 Keystone Industrial Park Road, Dunmore, PA 18512
